Family-Based Green Card Overview
The family-based green card process starts with a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident filing Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) to establish a qualifying family relationship. The petitioner must provide proof of the relationship, such as marriage or birth certificates, and evidence of their U.S. status.
Once USCIS approves the I-130, the process depends on the beneficiary’s location:
• Inside the U.S.: The beneficiary may file Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status) to apply for a green card.
• Outside the U.S.: The case proceeds through consular processing, where the beneficiary applies for an immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate.
The process includes providing supporting documents, attending a medical exam, and completing an interview. After approval, the green card is issued, granting lawful permanent residence.
